Paran serves as the nominal commander of a severely reduced group of surviving Bridgeburners. Originally an elite unit, the Bridgeburners suffered near-total destruction during the siege of Pale, where they fought against Anomander Rake and the Tiste Andii. Following this conflict, Paran leads these remnants toward Darujhistan to determine why gods and magical forces are increasingly involved in the campaign. The narrative notes that he travels alongside Tattersail, one of the few mages who survived the Siege of Pale. While Paran holds the rank of Captain, his authority is nominal, reflecting the fractured state of his unit after Laseen's seizure of power.

In Their Own Story

The story begins in the 96th year of the Malazan Empire at the twilight of Emperor Kellanved's reign. Young Ganoes Paran watches the destruction of the Mouse Quarter. Seven years later, the political landscape has shifted; Empress Laseen rules with the aid of the Claw, and the late Emperor is dead. Paran, now a Captain, moves toward Darujhistan alongside Tattersail. Their mission involves investigating the supernatural intervention in the war against the city. This campaign follows the fall of Pale, where Rake withdrew his floating fortress, Moon's Spawn, leading to heavy losses for the 2nd Army.
